Lone Star Farms has been sheep and beef farming in New Zealand since 1997.
History
Lone Star Farms started in 1997 with the purchase of Quartz Range in the Aorere Valley in Golden Bay. Puponga Farm Park was leased from the Department of Conservation in 1998 and Rainbow, Mt Albert, Barewood and Caberfeidh were purchased between 2000 and 2004, with The Wandle in 2009.
Hadleigh/Mt Clyde in the Wairarapa was purchased in 2012. Rainbow and Mt Albert were sold in 2016, Hadleigh/Mt Clyde was sold in 2019.
People
We have 35-40 staff, depending on the time of the year and specific activities on farm. Each farm has a farm manager who reports to a General Manager. The company has an advisory board who meet formally four times a year.
Our staff come from very wide backgrounds – from rural or urban, university or straight from school, experienced or holiday work experience – all with a range of experience and skill levels. We value passion for farming, willingness to learn, and the ability to work together.
Training
We pride ourselves on helping staff reach their potential. Our staff spend over 1,500 hours a year in formal training, as well as the informal on-farm training.
Communities
The Golden Bay, Kurow and Strath Taieri communities are very important to us whether our staff play sport, their children attend the local school, or they are just involved in the community.
Partners
Successful farming only happens with good partnerships and relationships, and these are very important to us – whether they are our shearing contractor, general suppliers, professional advisor or selling partners.
Research & Industry
We support the industry in several ways including scholarships, research and membership of industry organisations.
