Land & Soil

Lone Star Farms values the land it farms, our neighbouring land and the wider NZ environment.

Every farm has a Farm Environmental Plan that is reviewed and updated in conjunction with management policies and plans. This ensures we are continuously “farming better every day”, so our land can be sustained and enhanced for future generations.

Our plans guide us with decision-making around erosion, soil quality, crop management and feeding of livestock during the more challenging months. We utilise professional guidance from the likes of Soil Matters to ensure our soil health is maintained and enhanced.

We have used direct drilling (no tillage) for around 15 years (unless absolutely essential to use cultivation), to preserve the soil structure and minimise wind erosion.

Investment has been made into the use of variable-rate irrigation to maximise efficiency of water resources based on our land use and soil characteristics.
